In the 25th episode “To Kyoto”, the first episode of the second season of the anime, Kaoru is depressed after being dumped by Himura Kenshin (CV: Saito Soma). Megumi comes over and says harshly, “You see, I came here to make a good laugh out of the raccoon girl who got dumped by Ken-san.”
During their conversation, Kaoru was taken aback by Megumi’s feelings for Kenshin, but she burst into tears and said, “You’ll never understand, Megumi! You’ll never understand how I felt when he said goodbye to me to my face!” To which Megumi replied, “That’s true. But we’re in the same boat. You’ll never understand how I felt when he didn’t even say goodbye to me,” and told her, “Before you say that, sort out your feelings once more.”
Many viewers seemed touched by Megumi, who suppressed her feelings for Kenshin and encouraged Kaoru, saying things like “She’s the best woman,” “I’m in love with her,” “Megumi is so cool, teaching Kaoru how to be a grown-up,” and “It makes me cry too.”
The anime “Rurouni Kenshin” is based on the manga “Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story” by Watsuki Nobuhiro, which has sold over 72 million copies in total. The new TV anime series, with a completely new staff and cast, will air its first season in July 2023, with the second season, “Kyoto Uprising,” starting in October 2024. Set in early Meiji Japan, the story depicts the battles of Himura Kenshin, once feared as “Battousai the Assassin.”
