It has been revealed that the animated film “Look Back” has attracted 1.17 million viewers and grossed over 2 billion yen in its 15th week since its release. It has been a huge hit, grossing over 5 million dollars (approximately 740 million yen) in over 20 countries and regions around the world. To commemorate the milestone, it has also been announced that a commentary audio recording of the film by director Kiyotaka Oshiyama and original animator Toshiyuki Inoue will be screened from October 11th.
“Look Back” is a work by Tatsuki Fujimoto, who has worked on popular works such as “Fire Punch” and “Chainsaw Man,” and is also preparing for the release of the animated film “Chainsaw Man: Reze.” While vividly depicting the two girls, Fujino and Kyomoto, who continue to create manga wholeheartedly, the events that will eventually divide their fates are depicted with a strong sense of realism.
The theatrical anime based on the novel will be directed, scripted, and character designed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, who has worked as a key staff member on many popular works such as “Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance,” “The Secret World of Arrietty,” and “The Wind Rises.” The cast will include Yumi Kawai and Mizuki Yoshida in the lead roles.
Since its release on June 28th, word of mouth has continued to spread and the film has enjoyed an unusually long run in theaters. It has now been revealed that in its 15th week since release, the film has attracted a total of 1.17 million viewers and grossed over 2 billion yen. Furthermore, it has been shown around the world since July 31st, and it has been revealed that the cumulative gross in over 20 countries and regions worldwide has exceeded 5 million dollars (approximately 740 million yen, calculated at 148 yen to the dollar as of October 8th). Fans who have been eagerly awaiting the release are flocking to the theaters.
The film was released in over 530 theaters in North America on October 6th local time, and grossed $683,003 on the 6th (according to Box Office Mojo, 1 dollar = 148 yen), which is equivalent to 93.58 million yen, making it 6th in the daily ranking of the US box office gross on the 6th. It got off to a good start with a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is expected to gain even more popularity both at home and abroad.
To celebrate the film reaching 2 billion yen in box office revenue, it has been decided that a commentary audio commentary will be screened at theaters nationwide screening “Look Back” from October 11th. MOVIE,” wearing earphones at the theater and playing the audio on your smartphone, you can enjoy the audio commentary while watching the film.
Inoue laughed at the scene at the beginning where the sky is zooming in on Fujino’s house, saying, “It was a tough and difficult scene.” Director Oshiyama said, “Even though it was all drawn by hand, I think it was technically difficult to make the camera move down smoothly,” to which Inoue replied, “With digital technology, you can create a base to some extent, but it’s hand-drawn after all (laughs).”
Inoue also talks about Director Oshiyama’s various obsessions, saying, “Even though it may look low-calorie in terms of animation, there are some scenes that are surprisingly difficult, like a body blow,” and, “Director Oshiyama wanted to make the most of reflections in this film, so we did things that we would never normally do, such as the characters’ eyes, the paper reflected on the desk, and the fluorescent light reflected on the bookshelf in the room, which are time-consuming in terms of animation.” The
commentary audio allows you to enjoy the attention to detail that Director Oshiyama, Inoue, and the other elite animators have paid to, as well as behind-the-scenes stories about the animation. Be sure to enjoy new discoveries about “Look Back” at the theater.
