Respect for the Aged Day in 2024 falls on September 16th.
It is a national holiday established in 1996 to show respect for the elderly who have contributed to society and to celebrate their longevity. It used to be on September 15th, but in 2003 it was moved to the third Monday of September due to the Happy Monday system.

Grandfather and grandmother characters often appear in anime and games. They are portrayed differently in different works; some as living legends who once performed heroic deeds, some who continue to play an active role at the forefront even in old age, and some who maintain a youthful appearance forever.

So Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “Who is your ideal old man character?”
following on from last year. During the survey period from September 5th to September 9th, 260 people responded. The gender ratio was about 40 percent male, about 50 percent female, and about 10 percent gave no response, with more females than males. In terms of age group, the majority were young people, with about 35 percent under 19 and about 20 percent in their 20s.
