The “Kaiju No. 8 Exhibition,” where you can experience the world of “Kaiju No. 8,” a TV anime that was broadcast in April 2024, is being held at Gallery AaMo in Tokyo Dome City until November 10th. This article introduces the highlights of the exhibition.
Kaiju No. 8 is a manga by Naoya Matsumoto that began serialization on the manga magazine app “Shonen Jump+” on July 3, 2020. Immediately after the first episode was published, over 3,200 comments such as “It’s so exciting with such a fast-paced development” were posted in one day, and it has become a hot topic, trending on Twitter (now X) every time. It is being distributed simultaneously with Japan in eight languages (excluding some regions) through multiple overseas services. Print versions are published in 39 countries and regions.
A TV anime will be broadcast on TV Tokyo affiliates and others from April 2024, and X (formerly Twitter) will be streaming it in real time worldwide, attracting attention from both Japan and overseas.
The “Kaiju No. 8 Exhibition” will feature approximately 120 framed illustrations of famous scenes, “One Hundred Monster Scenes” depicting everyday scenes in which monsters exist, as well as life-size displays of the equipment and weapons of the defense force members, photo spots, and original merchandise for sale, allowing visitors to experience the world of “Kaiju No. 8.”
In addition, visitors will become “Defense Force Candidates” and tour the base, allowing them to “enjoy the pinnacle of battle manga that transcends dimensions.” The point is that it can be enjoyed by both die-hard fans of “Kaiju No. 8” and beginners.
Japan has one of the highest monster occurrence rates in the world – while walking through the site of a monster disaster, you can experience the story of how Hibino Kafka, who works at a monster cleaning company, transforms into a monster and becomes Monster No. 8.
The defense force’s missions, the members working on the front lines, and the monsters they are trying to defeat are introduced through illustrations of famous scenes and explanatory panels by the Japan Defense Force.
In the Defense Force Base Area, life-size Defense Force suits and equipment such as special weapons are on display.
Don’t miss the photo spot with the life-size special weapons used by Shinomiya Kikoru and Hoshina Soushirou.
A “cluster disaster” in which monsters appear all over the country.
As you follow the battles between the sworn enemies and the defense team members through framed illustrations, you’ll feel as if you’re in the middle of the battle.
What awaits them after the battle between Kaiju No. 8 and Kaiju No. 9?
The exhibition will feature “One Hundred Monster Scenes,” which depicts everyday scenes in which monsters exist, as well as color illustrations that have enriched the story.
In addition to the story and 100 monster scenes drawn specifically for the “Kaiju No. 8 Exhibition,” valuable early materials such as the drafts from before the series began will be on public display for the first time.
Also on display in this area are original messages and handwritten signatures from Matsumoto Naoya, the original author of “Kaiju No. 8.”
At the official shop at the end of the venue, there are many goods that can only be purchased here, such as official exhibition pamphlets, posters, miscellaneous goods, stationery, apparel, food, accessories, and made-to-order products.
In addition, to commemorate the opening of the “Kaiju No. 8 Exhibition,” six stores in Tokyo Dome City, where the exhibition is held, will be selling special menus themed on defense force members for a limited time. If you
order one of these menus during the period, you will receive one original “Kaiju No. 8 Exhibition” coaster (6 types in total/distributed randomly) for each item. This is also worth checking out.
