Five additional cast members, including Miyano Mamoru who will play the role of Kitakura Sensei, have been announced for the live-action drama “Drama Choose! Wingman,” which is based on the masterpiece by Masakazu Katsura, who is also known for “Video Girl Ai” and “I”s.” In addition, cast visuals and stills have also been released.
“Wingman” was the serial debut work of manga artist Masakazu Katsura, who is also known for “Video Girl Ai” and “I”s,” and is his signature work that was serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump” from 1983 to 1985. Heavily influenced by the special effects heroes of the 1980s, the style of the work gained popularity among both men and women, and it has continued to fascinate people in various genres, including being made into anime and games.
The story begins when a mysterious beautiful girl named Aoi appears before Hirono Kenta, a special effects geek who is looked down upon by those around him and leads a dull life. She claims to have escaped the clutches of evil and come from another dimension. Kenta draws his imaginary hero, “Wingman,” in Aoi’s Dream Notebook, and actually gains the ability to transform into Wingman. Kenta finally gets the power to transform into the hero he has always wanted, but assassins are sent one after another from the other world in pursuit of Aoi…
This time, “DramaChoose! Wingman” is a live-action drama commemorating the 40th anniversary of the work that revolutionized “Weekly Shonen Jump” in the 1980s. In this work, Hirono Kenta, who appears as a high school sophomore rather than a middle school student as in the original work, and who transforms into “Wingman”, will be played by Fujioka Maito, and Aoi, a mysterious girl who comes to the three-dimensional (Earth) world from the other-dimensional world of Podrimus, will be played by Kato Konatsu.
In addition, it has been reported that Kikuchi Himena, Katada Yoi, Uehara Amane, Jotaro, Ohara Yuno, Mihara Uehara, and Tachibana Haruki will appear as cast members surrounding Kenta and Aoi.
Now, the cast of unique new characters who will add even more color to the film have been revealed. Miyano Mamoru will play Mr. Kitakura, the handsome new teacher who will be assigned to the high school Kenta attends. Emi Kurara will play Mr. Matsuoka, Kenta’s homeroom teacher for Class 2A. Matoba Koji will play Kenta’s father, Hirono Seido, who keeps a warm eye on Kenta no matter what happens. Nakayama Shinobu will play Kenta’s mother, Hirono Yoshiko. Sugawara Daikichi will play the Prime Minister, who will become deeply involved in Wingman’s battles. Miyano and the others have also provided comments.
In addition, the cast visual, which shows the impressive serious expression of Kenta, played by Fujioka, and stills were also unveiled. The cast visual is a cutout of the expressions of the four characters who represent “Wingman”: Kenta, Aoi, Miku, and Kitakura-sensei. Each character’s thoughts intersect in complex ways, building expectations for the unfolding human drama.
“DramaChoose! Wingman,” a live-action drama adaptation of one of Masakazu Katsura’s masterpieces, “Wingman,” will begin airing on terrestrial television on October 22. Each episode will also be streamed simultaneously on “DMM TV” exclusively, with the first episode being streamed one week in advance starting October 16.
