To celebrate the 45th anniversary of “Mobile Suit Gundam” and the 55th anniversary of Hobby Japan, the November 2024 issue of the Gunpla-focused model magazine “Monthly Hobby Japan” has been released. It will be on sale at bookstores nationwide from September 25, 2024.
The Gundam series began with Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979. With its realistic depictions of warfare in which robots were treated as “weapons” known as “mobile suits,” meticulous scientific research, and complex, deep human drama, the series established the genre of “real robot anime,” which could not be described as a simple story of good versus evil, which had been the trend in robot anime up until that point. It sparked a major boom.
And “Gunpla” is a plastic model of a mobile suit. Since the birth of the “1/144 Gundam” in 1980, various products have been produced and shipped every day.
The recently released “Monthly Hobby Japan November 2024 issue” features a special article titled “Gundam’s 45-year history as seen through Hobby Japan.” The
45-year history of Gundam is unraveled from the perspective of “Monthly Hobby Japan,” and includes retrospective articles on the “All Japan Orazaku Championship,” “Gundam Gaiden Series,” and “Gunpla Supplement,” as well as revival examples.
There will also be examples of the “RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0” and a conversation between Mr. Yasunaga, a key figure in Gunpla development at the BANDAI SPIRITS Hobby Division, and the magazine’s editor-in-chief. The content will look back on the history of “Gundam” and explore its future possibilities.
In addition, a special supplement, “Hobby Japan Memorial 1980s” is included. This is a permanent edition that selects popular articles from “Monthly Hobby Japan” published in the 1980s and compiles them into one volume using high-resolution scans. It is a large volume of over 170 pages in full color.
In addition, the production process of the new plastic model “Figure-rise Standard Lunamaria Hawke” from “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY” by professional modeler sannoji is also published. You can see the careful part shaping and decal work, as well as the addition of a face using surplus parts.
“Monthly Hobby Japan November 2024 Issue” is on sale from September 25, 2024. It is priced at 1,980 yen (tax included) and can be purchased at bookstores nationwide.
