To celebrate the 5th anniversary of the opening of Cinema Sunshine LaLaport Numazu, it has been decided that special screenings of “Grave of the Fireflies” and “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,” both directed by Isao Takahata, will be held. The films will be screened on a weekly basis from October 4th to October 31st, 2024.

Takahata Isao was born in Mie Prefecture in 1935 and grew up in Okayama Prefecture. In 1968, he completed his first feature film, “The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun,” and in 1974, he directed all episodes of the TV series “Heidi, Girl of the Alps.” He later directed “3000 Leagues in Search of Mother” and “Anne of Green Gables.” He also served as producer for Hayao Miyazaki’s “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” released in 1984.

He helped found Studio Ghibli in 1985 and has written and directed such films as Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (1994), My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999), and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013).

To commemorate the 5th anniversary of Cinema Sunshine LaLaport Numazu’s opening on October 4th, a special screening of Takahata Isao’s works will be held. The two films to be screened are “Grave of the Fireflies” and “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.”

Grave of the Fireflies is an animated film based on the novel of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka, which was written based on his own experiences. It depicts the cruel fate of a young brother and sister who lost their parents in the war. Director Isao Takahata’s realistic and delicate direction beautifully portrays the lonely feelings of the brother and sister. The sight of fireflies illuminating the dark night, as if foreshadowing the fate of the two, is poignant.

Kobe in 1945. After their mother is hospitalized in a sudden air raid, 14-year-old Seita and 4-year-old Setsuko go to live with their aunt. However, after their mother dies, their aunt starts to treat them badly, so Seita takes Setsuko to an empty air raid shelter. The two of them start living together, cooking for themselves, but… this is the story that unfolds.

“The Tale of Princess Kaguya” is an entertainment blockbuster that took eight years to produce and cost 5 billion yen. Based on “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter,” Japan’s oldest literary story, the film depicts the reason why Princess Kaguya appeared on Earth and her turbulent fate that led her to eventually leave for the Moon, from the perspective of “Princess Kaguya’s sin and punishment.”
