The “Urusei Yatsura TV Anime Exhibition,” where visitors can enjoy the world of the TV anime “Urusei Yatsura,” will open on October 2, 2024 at the Event Square on the 8th floor of Matsuya Ginza in Tokyo. On the eve of the opening, the opening ceremony was held on October 1, and was attended by Shinya Arino of the comedy duo “Yoiko,” who was appointed as the official supporter of the exhibition, and Sumire Uesaka, the voice actress who played the heroine Lum in the TV anime “Urusei Yatsura.” They talked about the appeal and highlights of the exhibition.
“Urusei Yatsura” is a slapstick love comedy based on a manga by Rumiko Takahashi, centering on the “most dangerous” high school student on Earth, Ataru Moroboshi, and the beautiful alien girl Lum who is devoted to him. The story unfolds in the fictional town of Tomobiki, as well as in space and other dimensions.
The first TV anime series was broadcast on Fuji TV and other networks for about four and a half years from October 1981 to March 1986. Six theatrical anime films related to the first series were also produced, and an original TV anime was also produced after the TV series ended.
On January 1, 2022, it was announced that the series would be adapted into a TV anime for the first time in about 36 years to commemorate Shogakukan’s 100th anniversary. The first season was broadcast on Fuji TV’s “Noitamina” and other stations from October 2022 to March 2023, and the second season from January 2024 to June 2024.
The recently opened “TV Anime ‘Urusei Yatsura’ Exhibition” has a story concept of “Girl Hunt with Ataru”. The event will introduce the unique characters and the charm of this work, which combines nostalgia and newness of the Showa and Reiwa eras.
The pre-show “Girl Hunt with Ataru” will begin with an original video for the exhibition, followed by a corner for each character with valuable setting materials. Other highlights include a life-size figure of Lum that is exclusive to this exhibition, and an exhibition of illustrations celebrating the 45th anniversary of “Urusei Yatsura” by 33 manga artists, including Gosho Aoyama and Mitsuru Adachi.
Additionally, original merchandise commemorating the exhibition will be available at the venue, including “Lam blankets,” “connecting acrylic charms,” “character pins,” “candy jelly,” “tote bags,” “acrylic blocks,” “pixel art mesh pouches,” “character postcard sets,” “postcard books,” and “original acrylic stands.”
Furthermore, the collaboration menu is also available at the MG Cafe in Matsuya Ginza’s Restaurant City on the 8th floor. You can get a special coaster with every order of the collaboration menu, and some of the menu items are available for takeout, such as the Urusei Yatsura Random Latte, so be sure to stop by when you visit.
