Dwarf Studio’s latest work, “Komaneko’s Travels,” which has worked on the Netflix series “Rilakkuma and Kaoru-san” and the unprecedented stop-motion period drama “HIDARI,” will be released nationwide from October 25, 2024. A long trailer filled with 20 years of love for “Komaneko” has been unveiled. It has also been decided to hold an exhibition in collaboration with “Hobonichi.”
“Komaneko” is an original work created in 2003 by Dwarf Studio, renowned as the pinnacle of stop motion animation in Japan. It depicts the daily life of “Koma-chan,” a female cat who loves making things using stop motion photography, in a world full of kindness. When “Komaneko: Stop Motion Movie,” released in theaters in 2006, it was a smash hit, attracting 30,000 viewers nationwide, mainly at arthouse theaters. The series has been screened in a total of 22 countries around the world, and is still loved by people of all ages and countries.
“Komaneko’s Overseas Trip” is the first new work in 11 years, a short film depicting the friendship and growth of the main character Koma-chan, who goes on her first trip abroad. It will be released in theaters along with three other films from the “Stop Motion Picture Komaneko” series, which are highly regarded as masterpieces: “The First Step,” “Komaneko and Radiobo,” and “True Friends.” It is a luxurious program of 50 minutes, like a “treasure box” filled with four masterpieces.
The long trailer that was unveiled this time includes footage from the new film “Koma Neko no Kaigai Ryokou,” as well as precious footage from the films “Hajime no Ippo,” “Komato and Radiobo,” and “Honto no Tomodachi,” which will be screened at the same time. Since its launch in 2003, the accumulation of footage, which has been produced with love for each and every frame, has created a one-of-a-kind world.
Falling in love with the things she loves, making new friends… A series of endearing stories filled with many “firsts.” Longtime fans, as well as those who are experiencing “Komaneko” for the first time, will surely be touched by the warmth that only a stop-motion film can provide and the cuteness of Koma-chan. Supportive comments have also been received from popular creators who consider themselves “Komaneko” fans.
Furthermore, it has been decided that an exhibition will be held from October 17th to 27th at “TOBICHI Tokyo,” a facility run by copywriter Shigesato Itoi’s website “Hobonichi Itoi Shimbun” (commonly known as “Hobonichi”). Titled
“Let’s go see Komaneko’s outdoor trip! Exhibition,” the exhibition will display the Koma-chan doll used in the filming, the “attic” set, and props. There will also be a variety of other events, including merchandise for sale and chances to win instant cameras. This exhibition will also be held at “TOBICHI Kyoto” from February 21st to March 12th, 2025.
In addition, LINE stamps featuring the adorable poses and expressions of each character, including Koma-chan, will be released, and a theater-exclusive gift to all moviegoers, “Always with Koma-chan! Clear Character Stand,” will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so these are also not to be missed.
Dwarf Studio’s latest film, “Koma Neko’s International Trip,” will be released in cinemas nationwide from October 25th.
