The movie “Kitaro Birth: Gegege no Nazo Shinseiban” was released on October 4th and was ranked third in the weekend attendance rankings. It made a big hit start, grossing over 150 million yen in three days. It has also been decided that the second round of special gifts will be distributed to moviegoers from October 11th.
“The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe” was released in 2023 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki’s birth, and is a film that depicts the story of Kitaro’s fathers being told for the first time. When it was released in November 2023, it became a hot topic due to the meeting between Kitaro’s father, formerly known as Medama Oyaji, and Mizuki, the sadness of the fate the two faced, and the intensity of the battle scenes. The film attracted many audiences, grossing 2.79 billion yen and attracting a total audience of 1.95 million people.
The film “The Birth of Kitaro: The Gegege Mystery – True Version” was released as the “true version” that the production team had originally envisioned, with 327 retakes of the original cuts and redubbed sound. After its release on October 4th, the film grossed 156,305,640 yen over the three-day weekend until October 6th, and drew 97,666 people. It was ranked third in both domestic film attendance and box office revenue. Furthermore, the cumulative number of moviegoers since last year has exceeded 2 million, and the cumulative box office revenue has exceeded 2.9 billion yen, finally putting the 3 billion yen mark within reach.
Although there are no additional scenes added to the main story, the quality of the footage has been improved, and many rave reviews have been posted on social media. In addition, the 4DX version, which started on the same day, is also doing well, with tickets continuing to sell out at each theater. Audiences who have seen the 4DX version seem to be expressing their joy at the realism and blood splatter that makes them feel like they are actually taking part in the battle.
