It has been announced that the movie “Top Gun: Maverick,” starring Tom Cruise, will be broadcast for the first time on terrestrial television on November 15th, in its entirety, on the Nippon Television Network’s movie program “Friday Road Show.” The first movie, “Top Gun,” will be broadcast the week before, on November 8th.
The first film in the series, “Top Gun,” which will be broadcast on November 8th, is a huge hit starring Tom Cruise, grossing over 350 million dollars worldwide and 6.5 billion yen in Japan, making it the No. 1 foreign film of the year.
The song “Breathtakingly Beautiful” sung by Berlin won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and the soundtrack, which includes the theme song “Danger Zone” sung by Kenny Loggins, reached number one in the US. Furthermore, the MA-1 flight jacket worn by American pilots became a big hit among young people, and the film was a huge hit.
The title “Top Gun” is the nickname for the Navy Fighter Weapons School, which was established to teach U.S. Navy fighter pilots the techniques, strategies, and effective use of weapons in aerial combat. It is the Navy’s elite pilot training school to which the main character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his partner Nick “Goose” Bradshaw are sent.
This film is not just about action, but also about the characters’ conflicts, growth, friendship, love, and other memorable human dramas. In particular, it is a masterpiece that carefully depicts the relationship between Maverick and Iceman, who change from rivals to trusted partners.
The following week, on November 15th, “Top Gun: Maverick” will be broadcast on terrestrial television for the first time. It will be released in 2022 and will be a mega-hit that has become a social phenomenon, grossing $1.5 billion worldwide and $13.7 billion in Japan. It is the long-awaited sequel to “Top Gun,” which has been desired by many but has not been realized for a long time.
Tom Cruise, who believed that “ultimate realism” was necessary to produce a new work that surpassed the previous one, negotiated with the US Navy himself. After 35 years since the previous work, he was finally able to film the new work with satisfactory filming techniques.
As with the previous film, not only was a camera placed inside a real fighter jet’s cockpit, but six IMAX-quality cameras were used for filming. The footage inside the cockpit has been further improved, and the film succeeds in conveying the full force of realistic battle scenes without using CG synthesis.
In order to get into a real fighter jet (F/A-18), the actors underwent five months of rigorous training before filming finally began. The actors’ realistic expressions as they act while being subjected to powerful “G-forces (gravitational acceleration)” that are 7.5 to 8 times stronger than normal gravity are a must-see.
The story begins when Maverick, who has retired and become a test pilot for a hypersonic test aircraft aiming for Mach 10, returns to his old home of “Top Gun” as an instructor.
There, waiting for Maverick are 12 elite pilots who are graduates of Top Gun. Among them is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of his partner Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, who died in a training accident 30 years ago.
Maverick is tasked with training the group to carry out a “top secret order” that is so difficult it seems impossible to carry out.
The cast includes Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer as Iceman, Miles Teller as Goose’s son Rooster, and Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, Maverick’s former girlfriend.
The Japanese dub will feature Tomoyuki Morikawa, who is well known for dubbing Tom Cruise, as Maverick, Hiroki Tochi as Iceman, Mamoru Miyano as Rooster, and current Top Gun members Yuichi Nakamura, Maaya Uchida, Shunsuke Takeuchi, Subaru Kimura, Yuuma Uchida, and Kenji Sugimura as Top Gun members.
Takako Honda as Penny, bringing together a cast of popular and talented voice actors who are the backbone of the modern Japanese voice acting world.
By watching the first film, “Top Gun,” you can experience the conflict between Rooster and Maverick, which is an important axis of the story. Many scenes and items that are deeply connected also appear, so be sure to watch it before watching “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The first of the two consecutive weeks of “Top Gun” broadcasts on November 8, 2024, will see “Top Gun” expand its broadcast time by 20 minutes. The following week on November 15, “Top Gun: Maverick” will expand its broadcast time by 40 minutes and be broadcast on terrestrial television for the first time in its entirety. Both will start at 9 p.m. on Nippon Television’s movie program “Friday Road Show.”
