It has been announced that the anime film “Look Back”, based on the original work by Tatsuki Fujimoto and directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, will be exclusively distributed worldwide in over 240 countries and regions on Prime Video from November 8th. In conjunction with this, a key visual drawn by Director Oshiyama has been released, along with comments from Director Oshiyama and Fujimoto.
The animated film “Look Back” is a theatrical animation adaptation of a one-shot manga of the same name published in “Shonen Jump+” in 2021 by Tatsuki Fujimoto, a manga artist known for “Chainsaw Man” and “Fire Punch.”
The story begins when Fujino, a fourth-grader who serializes four-panel manga in his school newspaper and receives rave reviews from his classmates, is suddenly told one day by his teacher that he wants to publish a four-panel manga by his classmate Kyomoto, who has been absent from school. As the story follows the growth of the two boys, who are connected by their single-minded passion for manga, it depicts a shocking event that occurs one day that shatters everything. This heart-piercing and overwhelming coming-of-age story has attracted much attention.
When the theatrical anime was released on June 28, 2024, it initially started out in a medium-sized theater, about 120 theaters nationwide, but recorded the number one box office revenue for two consecutive weeks. Since then, the number of theaters showing it has continued to increase, and as of October 7, it has become a hit, with box office revenue exceeding 2 billion yen.
The director, scriptwriter, and character designer are Oshiyama Kiyotaka, who has been involved as a key staff member in many major theatrical productions such as “Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance,” “The Secret World of Arrietty,” and “The Wind Rises.”
The main character Fujino is played by Kawai Yumi, who gained popularity for her role as Junko in the drama “Fuketei mo Hodo Aru!” and whose acting skills and unique presence have attracted much attention. The other main character Kyomoto is played by Yoshida Mizuki, who has been spurred on by her remarkable performance in films such as “A Hot Heartache” and “The Song of Kamuy.” Fujimoto’s passionate coming-of-age
story has been made into an animated film by a stellar cast and staff.
This is also the first time that Amazon MGM Studios, which has produced numerous hit works around the world, has participated in a Japanese anime production committee. Prime Video will be exclusively streaming an anime film released in theaters in Japan for the first time since “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time,” which was exclusively streamed worldwide in August 2021.
The key visual released ahead of the global release on Prime Video was an original drawing by Director Oshiyama. It shows Kyomoto lying on the bed in Fujino’s room, amazed as he reads Fujino’s manuscript, his greatest work, as the first reader. Comments were also provided by James Farrell, head of international originals at Amazon MGM Studios, Oshiyama, director, scriptwriter and character designer, and Fujimoto, the original author, regarding the global exclusive release.
The animated film “Look Back” will be available worldwide exclusively on Prime Video from November 8, 2024.
