The TV anime “Voltes V: Legacy” has been adapted into a live-action film in the Philippines, where it enjoys enthusiastic support, and is currently being shown in the “Voltes V: Legacy” edited version. This time, a retro ending video has been released, paying homage to the anime opening in live action. The jumping movements by Yoshinori Kanada are also recreated, which is a highlight of the film.
“Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V” is the second installment of the “Nagahama Roman Robo Series” directed by Tadao Nagahama, produced following the huge success of “Super Electromagnetic Robot Combattler V”. It was broadcast from 1977 to 1978 and sparked a robot anime boom. The story follows
the invasion of the planet Boazan led by Prince Heinel from far away space, who arrives on Earth, and the five of them – Kenichi, the Gozo brothers, Mine Ippei, and Oka Megumi – who board the secretly constructed Voltes V to fight the Boazan aliens.
About half a century later, the film “Voltes V Legacy” has been adapted into a live-action film in the Philippines, where the work has received enthusiastic support. To commemorate its triumphant return to its birthplace, Japan, the film has been released as a “Super Electromagnetic Edited Version” with new scenes added by the Filipino production team and further improved on the quality of the highly praised CG.
Since the first day of release, many “Voltes V” fans have flocked to the theaters, and the film has been praised for its powerful battle scenes and fusion scenes that have led to many comments such as “Wow, they did a great job!” The reason for its high evaluation is that it is full of love for the original anime. The ending video, which clearly shows the respect for the original work, has now been released uncut.
This ending video pays homage to the opening of the original anime. Of particular note is the reproduction of the unpredictable movements, one of the characteristics of the animation by Yoshinori Kaneda, who was in charge of the opening of the original anime. The bouncing movements of the five main characters, the Voltes Team, are an example of this, and appear many times throughout the ending video.
Hanakura Kido, who voiced Big Bert Armstrong, one of the Voltes Team, said of this ending during the opening day stage greeting, “The level of reproduction was so good that I thought, ‘That’s too much!’ I couldn’t help but laugh when I was recording it,” revealing the video is filled with so much love that it could be called fanatical.
Furthermore, this video unfolds to the theme song “Voltes V no Uta” just like the original anime. Filipino singer Julie Ann San Jose listened to the voice of Mitsuko Horie, who sang the opening theme song for the original anime, and even Horie herself was surprised at how similar her pronunciation and singing style was, further enhancing the perfection of the homage. The opening
video of the original anime can be seen in the first and second episodes currently streaming on Toei Theater Online on YouTube. Be sure to see this film in the theater, not just the ending video, but the main story as well, which is full of respect and love for the original anime.
