“Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro” to be screened in IMAX for the first time! Newly drawn illustrations to commemorate the 45th anniversary also unveiled

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the release of the film “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro,” a revival screening will be held from November 29, 2024. In addition to this, a special IMAX screening will also be held from the same day. In conjunction with this, two different poster visuals for the IMAX version and the regular version, as well as a newly drawn illustration for the 45th anniversary by Daisuke Sakamoto, the director of “LUPIN ZERO,” were unveiled.

The film “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro” was released on December 15, 1979 as the second theatrical release in the “Lupin III” series.

The story takes place in the small European country of Cagliostro. Lupin invades the small European country of Cagliostro, the source of the Goat bills known as the “phantom counterfeit bills,” and meets the beautiful princess Clarice.
Since the death of the Grand Duke, Lupin has been in control of the principality, and he learns of the schemes of Count Cagliostro and the hidden side of the quiet kingdom. What is the secret of the Cagliostro Kingdom? And will Lupin be able to defeat his nemesis Count Cagliostro and save Clarice? Lupin’s challenge unfolds, involving Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko, and Inspector Zenigata.

Known as the directorial debut of master director Hayao Miyazaki, the meticulous character setting, storyline, and powerful car action scenes still remain relevant even in the heyday of CG animation.

To commemorate the 45th anniversary of its release, the film will be shown again from November 29th, and it has now been revealed that from the same day it will also be shown in a special IMAX format at 52 cinemas nationwide.

This special IMAX screening will be a precious opportunity for movie fans to experience this timeless masterpiece with the latest imaging technology. With a large screen that covers the entire field of view, realistic sharp images, and a high-precision sound system, Director Miyazaki’s fresh talent is poured into the film, and the world view he has depicted is expressed more clearly than ever before, inviting the viewer to an overwhelming sense of immersion. The
beautiful backgrounds, carefully crafted in detail in an era before digital technology existed, the lively and delicate expressions of the characters, and the numerous action scenes and famous scenes that have been passed down in the history of Japanese animation are brought back to life as a new imaging experience with a sense of realism that makes them seem as if they are jumping out of the screen.

This will be the first time the film has been shown in IMAX since its release 45 years ago. Experience this timeless masterpiece, one of the greatest works of Japanese animation, in a special theater that offers the world’s most immersive movie experience.

In addition, to coincide with the decision to hold a special IMAX screening, two types of poster visuals have been released: an IMAX version and a regular version. The regular version uses the visual from when the film was released in 1979, while the IMAX version uses an illustration specially drawn for 2021. Both posters will be displayed at the theaters where the film will be screened, so be sure to check out both the old and new visuals.

In addition, new illustrations drawn by Daisuke Sakamoto, the director of “LUPIN ZERO”, were also unveiled to commemorate the 45th anniversary. There are completely new visuals and rewritten visuals of famous scenes from the main story. These illustrations will be used on the official website that was opened in conjunction with the special screening, and will also be available as 45th anniversary commemorative products at the theater, so fans should not miss them.

Revival screenings to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the release of the film “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro” will begin on November 29th in both the regular and IMAX versions.
