The all-new animated film “The Rose of Versailles” will be released on January 31, 2025. To coincide with her birthday on November 2, new stills of Marie Antoinette have been unveiled. They offer a glimpse of her life as the Queen of France, a woman, and a mother during the turbulent revolutionary period.
The Rose of Versailles, also known as The Rose of Versailles, is a masterpiece by Ikeda Riyoko that vividly depicts the love and lives of people trying to live their lives in revolutionary France. It has been serialized in Weekly Margaret since 1972, and has sold over 20 million copies. The original manga, which has garnered enthusiastic support from readers since its serialization, has become a social phenomenon in many ways, including being adapted for the stage by the Takarazuka Revue and for a TV anime, and has become a milestone in the world of girls’ manga.
The completely new animated film will be directed by Yoshimura Ai, known for “Ao Haru Ride” and “Cheer Boys!!”, and animated by MAPPA, known for “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “In This Corner of the World”.
The cast includes Sawashiro Miyuki as Oscar François de Jarjayes, Hirano Aya as Marie Antoinette, Toyonaga Toshiyuki as Andre Grandier, and Kato Kazuki as Hans Axel von Fersen. Other cast members include Takeuchi Shunsuke as Alain de Soissons, Eguchi Takuya as Florian de Gelodel, and Irino Miyu as Bernard Châtelet.
As November 2nd is the birthday of one of the main characters, Marie Antoinette, five new stills of her have been unveiled to commemorate the occasion. Marie Antoinette was the daughter of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, and came to France at the age of 14 to become the wife of King Louis XVI of France.
Beautiful and proud, with a natural charm that draws people in, she has a fateful encounter with the young Swedish nobleman Hans Axel von Fersen at a masked ball at the Paris Opera House, and they fall in love, though it is forbidden. In an attempt to escape the pressures of those around her, she leads a free-spirited and extravagant life, which attracts the discontent of the impoverished citizens of Paris, and her fate begins to change.
With her glamorous and glamorous appearance and fashion, she has been an object of admiration for women around the world for over 50 years.
In the new stills, we can see a glimpse of Antoinette’s life, from her bright and lovely childhood to her beautiful and cheerful growth as Queen of France. While feeling cramped in a foreign country, the French court, Antoinette’s loneliness is healed by Fersen, whom she meets by fate.
Although it was a forbidden love for her as the wife of Louis XVI, it was also her happiness as a woman. However, on the other hand, as a queen and a mother, Antoinette lived a turbulent revolutionary period with pride and love in her heart, trying to protect her country, France. I would like to draw attention to her dignified way of life.
The voice of Antoinette in this production will be played by Hirano Aya, a voice actor, actor and singer who has appeared in many masterpieces such as the role of Eponine in the musical “Les Miserables” and the role of Isabella in the Disney movie “Mirabelle and the Enchanted House”. In recent years, Hirano has captivated many people with her beautiful voice and singing, mainly in musicals.
Regarding this production, Hirano commented, “I think this direction is quite a challenge. It was very clear that each member of the production team had a strong attachment to the work and was creating it with respect. I hope that this production will revolutionize the image of The Rose of Versailles that everyone has, and mark the beginning of a new era.”
While faithfully depicting the original story that has been loved by generations for over 50 years, the birth of a new Antoinette played by Hirano, with her overwhelming acting and singing talent, raises expectations even further.
