A special screening to commemorate the winning of the Grand Prix at an overseas film festival for “The Feast of Amrita,” a personal animated film by animation artist Saku Sakamoto, has been scheduled to be held at Cinema House Otsuka in Otsuka, Tokyo on November 17th and 24th, 2024.
“Amrita no Kyoken” is a new anime film that depicts the prequel to his debut feature-length anime film “Aranie no Mushikō”, directed, animated, written the original story, screenplay, and music by Sakamoto Saku, who also worked on illustrations and animation for the TV drama “MOZU”. The film follows the story of Tamahi, a high school girl who is the new protagonist, as she is attacked by various mysterious phenomena and unknown fears. It is a shocking horror entertainment movie that can be enjoyed whether you have seen the previous film or not.
Saku Sakamoto, who astonished the world with his outstanding technique in his previous work, “Aranye’s Insect Cage,” once again took on the challenge of directing, animating, creating the original story, scriptwriting, and music for this film. He once again took on the challenge of making an animated film alone, producing everything except for the voice recordings and sound effects.
The film was officially selected for the 56th Sitges Catalan International Film Festival, a prestigious fantastic film festival, and won the Audience Award at the 6th Tbilisi International Animation Film Festival in Georgia, garnering international attention.
This year, the film won the Best Feature Film Award (Grand Prix) at the 7th Animotion Film Festival in Florence, Italy, and won the Best Animation Award (Grand Prix in the Animation Category) at the Philip K. Dick Film Festival 2024, named after the popular science fiction writer, held in New York. This was also Director Sakamoto’s long-cherished dream of winning the Grand Prix.
This special screening will be held to commemorate this.
At the screening, the new anime film “Ghost Bugs”, which was re-edited to strengthen the horror elements by combining “The Feast of Amrita” and the previous work “The Insect Cage of Aranje” at the request of an overseas film company, will be shown in Japan for the first time as a reverse import. When this film was unofficially screened at overseas horror film festivals and horror events, it was highly praised and applauded by horror movie fans, who said, “It’s too scary for an anime,” and “The world view is interesting, like a combination of Junji Ito and Lovecraft.” It is a work with a history.
Other events include a talk show with three actresses who were the models for the anime characters in “The Feast of Amrita,” namely Shinka Kiyume, Harada Erika, and Kurahashi Ayari, as well as director Sakamoto, a screening of “The Feast of Amrita” with rare behind-the-scenes footage, and a free screening of a barrier-free version of “The Insect Cage of Aragne” with Japanese subtitles. Advance reservations are required for the free screening of “The Insect Cage of Aragne,” and if reservations exceed the capacity, a lottery will be held. Other programs are charged for each showing.
In the run up to the event, the Japanese version teaser poster and stills for “GHOST BUGS” were also unveiled. The teaser poster by Director Sakamoto features a nightmarish design of “moth ghost bugs” with eyeball patterns flying around in the dark night. They are said to swarm around corpses and lead those who see them to death.
