To commemorate the 45th anniversary of the release of the theatrical version of “Galaxy Express 999,” it has been announced that “Galaxy Express 999 4K Remaster Edition” will be revived and shown nationwide for two weeks only starting December 13th. The revival screening project is being organized by “Filmarks,” one of the largest review services for movies, dramas, and anime in Japan.
“Galaxy Express 999” is based on a science fiction manga by Leiji Matsumoto that began serialization in 1977, and was made into a TV anime in 1978 and a feature film in 1979, becoming a huge hit. It is known as a hugely popular work that sparked a science fiction boom in Japan and will go down in history as one of the most popular works in anime history.
The film version was produced by a team of elite staff, including Matsumoto Leiji in charge of planning, original story and composition, Rintaro as director, Komatsubara Kazuo as animation director, Mukuo Takamura and Kubota Tadao as art directors, and Kaneda Yoshinori and Tomonaga Kazuhide as animation directors.
Set in a future world where the wealthy have become automatons and enjoy eternal life, the protagonist Tetsuro Hoshino, whose mother was killed by the Machine Count, boards the Galaxy Express 999 with the mysterious beauty Maetel and travels through space to a planet that will give him a mechanical body. Captain Harlock, Emeraldas, Tochiro… a magnificent masterpiece of love and emotion in which charming heroes and heroines all come together to develop a grand romance.
To commemorate the 45th anniversary of the release of the theatrical version of Galaxy Express 999, the revival screening of the Galaxy Express 999 4K Remastered Edition will be held for two weeks only from December 13th.
