It has been announced that a new series of the legendary comedy anime “Obocchama-kun” will be produced in India, where the series is experiencing a resurgence in popularity after about 30 years, and will be broadcast across India next spring. With the kind permission of the original author, Yoshinori Kobayashi, the series will be co-produced by TV Asahi and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI).
“Obocchama-kun” is a comedy anime series that was broadcast on TV Asahi from 1989 to 1992, based on the manga by Yoshinori Kobayashi that was serialized in “Monthly CoroCoro Comic” from 1986. It depicts the “splendid and turbulent days” of Gobo Chama, the heir to the world-famous wealthy Gobo Zaibatsu, who transfers to an elite school for the children of wealthy families, with a mind-blowing scale and barrages of gags. It is known for creating a huge boom, coupled with Chama’s unique “Chama-speak” such as “Oha yogurt” and “Sonna banana.”
Now, about 30 years later, the show has become popular on Indian kids’ channels across time and borders, and there are eager voices calling for a new season. This new series was launched in response to such enthusiastic requests from India and with Kobayashi’s kind consent. TV Asahi and SPNI have teamed up to produce 26 episodes of 22 minutes each (52 episodes of 11 minutes each) in a Japan-India collaboration.
The new series is scheduled to be broadcast across India next year on the SPNI-affiliated children’s channel “SONY YAY!”. The scenario will be written by Shin-Ei Animation, a group company of TV Asahi that previously worked on the Japanese version of “Obocchama-kun,” and the animation will be produced in India. It seems that episodes that bring together the creative strengths of both countries are being produced with great enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, at MIPCOM 2024, the world’s largest international distribution market for TV and video content, held in Cannes, France, the world premiere of “Obocchama-kun” was held on October 21. After a selection of episodes from the new series was screened, a talk session was also held by SPNI, TV Asahi, and the Indian animation studio Green Gold Animation.
The media representatives who came from all over the world enjoyed the unique world of Chama, and showed a lot of interest in this new production, which was initiated by the voices of Indian children, and the world premiere ended with a great success. We are looking forward to seeing even more excitement for “Obocchama-kun” with the new series.
