It has been decided that the second season of the TV anime “Funeral of Freiren” will be produced. The story will continue from the end of the first season, when the characters set out again from the land of Oisarst, the setting of the “First Class Wizard Exam Arc”. In conjunction with this, the teaser visual and announcement video for the second season were released, and congratulatory comments and illustrations from the original creators Yamada Kanehito and Abe Tsukasa have also arrived.
“Funeral of Frieren” is a manga written by Yamada Kanehito and illustrated by Abe Tsukasa, which is currently being serialized in “Weekly Shonen Sunday”. Set in a world “after” the Demon King was defeated by a hero and his party, the story follows the journey of Frieren, a magician who has lived for over a thousand years and who defeated the Demon King alongside the hero, and the new people she meets.
The story unfolds in a unique timeline “after the defeat of the Demon King” and is full of heart-wrenching drama and dialogue, magic and sword fights, and humor that will have you laughing out loud, attracting many readers. The currently on sale comics have sold over 22 million copies, creating a sensation among manga fans.
The TV anime based on the story was broadcast on television from the first special episode on Friday Road Show on September 29, 2023 until March 22, 2024. During the half year, the work received a great response from a wide range of viewers, not just anime fans. Now, one year after the first broadcast last year, the long-awaited information has finally been announced that the second season of the TV anime will be produced.
The first season covered up to the “First Class Wizard Exam” arc, in which Freiren battles to gain the qualifications to become a “First Class Wizard,” which is necessary to reach Aureole, the land where souls rest, which is the destination of her journey.
The second season will continue the story from the end of the first season, when Freiren, his apprentice Fern, who has qualified as a first-class wizard, and the warrior Stark set out again from the land of Oisarst, the setting of the “First-Class Wizard Exam Arc.” In the original work, it will start from chapter 61 of volume 7 of the manga, and Madhouse will continue to be in charge of animation production as in the first season.
The teaser visual released with the announcement depicts Frielen’s bag, Fern’s staff, Stark’s axe, and the shadows of the three characters all placed in the shade of a tree. The tranquil impression suggests the start of a new journey for the three characters. The announcement video is woven with the teaser visual and a newly recorded voice of Frielen, played by Tanezaki Atsumi (the kanji for 崎 is “tatsusaki”), saying, “Shall we continue our journey?”
Following the announcement of the second season, congratulatory comments and illustrations were also sent by Yamada Kanehito and Abe Tsukasa. In their joint signatures, Yamada and Abe wrote, “The second season of the anime has been decided! We owe it all to everyone who has supported us. We are eternally grateful to everyone involved in the anime who has made this wonderful anime. As a viewer, I look forward to Frieren’s journey as she begins again. We hope you will continue to support ‘Furier Parlor Frieren’.”
Abe’s celebratory illustration of the second season includes the “Hero Party” including Frieren, Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen. It will be interesting to see how the manga “Frieren’s Funeral” by the two authors will be presented to fans and viewers in the second season of the anime.
Other details about the second season of the “Funeral of Frieren” anime, such as the broadcast schedule, will be announced at a later date. Please look forward to further information.
