It has been announced that a movie version of the TV anime “My Dangerous Girlfriend” will be produced. It will be a special edited version of the TV series with new footage, and will also depict what happens to Ichikawa and Yamada afterwards. Along with the announcement, a congratulatory illustration has also arrived from the original author, Norio Sakurai.
“My Dangerous Girlfriend” is a romantic comedy currently being serialized in “Champion Cross” and is the latest work by Norio Sakurai, who is also known for “Mitsudomoe”. It depicts the first love story between Ichikawa, a gloomy middle school student with a chuunibyou syndrome, and Yamada, a beautiful and innocent girl.
The total number of copies of the comic has exceeded 5.5 million, and it has been ranked in “This Manga is Amazing! Men’s Edition” for two consecutive years, as well as taking first place in the “Next Manga Awards 2020 Web Manga Division”.
The first season of the TV anime began airing in April 2023, and the second season in January 2024, on the “NUMAnimation” block on 24 TV Asahi affiliated stations nationwide, as well as on BS Asahi and CS TV Asahi Channel 1. In addition, the main series as well as the spin-off anime “Tsuiyaba” are available for unlimited viewing exclusively on Prime Video.
The decision to produce a movie version was announced at the “Fan Appreciation Project!! TV Anime ‘My Dangerous Girlfriend’ Retrospective Screening ~We Gathered Again” event held at Shinjuku Wald 9 in Tokyo on September 29, 2024. When the announcement was made during a special video shown at the end of the event, thunderous cheers and applause erupted from the audience, with some audience members even sobbing in emotion.
Apparently the cast had not even been informed of this, and when they appeared on stage, Horie Shun (role of Ichikawa Kyotaro) and Hitsujimiya Hina (role of Yamada Anna) looked at each other with wide eyes and said, “W-what a surprise! Did you know?” and “Huh?!”, unable to hide their surprise and joy, and looking stunned. They were also moved by the illustration Sakurai sent to commemorate the film’s production. “I’m just so happy!” he said, and Horie expressed his hopes, saying, “Could there be a third season?”
Finally, Hitsujimiya said, “I never expected the event to end with such an announcement. We really love ‘BokuYaba’ too. We are really happy to be able to return to the world of ‘BokuYaba’ again. The original work is of course continuing, but I’m looking forward to seeing Anna-chan and the others in action!” He expressed his overwhelming feelings with tears in his eyes. Horie said, “We really didn’t expect such a happy announcement. I’m just so happy to be able to see them again. I’m going to get pumped up and do the dubbing (for the movie) again.”
