It has been announced that the movie “Godzilla 1.0” will be broadcast for the first time on terrestrial television on November 1st, uncut, on the Nippon Television Network’s movie program “Friday Road Show.” Last year’s smash hit, which also won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, will be making an appearance early on. In preparation for the premiere, comments have been received from Kamiki Ryunosuke, Hamabe Minami, and director Yamazaki Takashi.
“Godzilla-1.0” was produced to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Godzilla in 2023. The film is full of the “drama of humans” who desperately fight back against Godzilla, who suddenly appears in Japan after losing everything after the defeat in World War II. The film grossed over 7.6 billion yen in Japan and became a huge hit not only in Japan but all over the world. It is
still fresh in our memory that it became the first Japanese and Asian film to win the Best Visual Effects award at the 96th Academy Awards.
Towards the end of World War II. Lieutenant Shikishima Koichi goes on a kamikaze mission but makes an emergency landing on Odo Island. That night, a mysterious giant 15m-tall dinosaur-like creature, known to the islanders as Gojira, attacks the base. The unit is wiped out, leaving Shikishima behind. The war has caused everyone to lose everything, and Tokyo has become a burnt wasteland. After learning that he had lost his parents in an air raid, Shikishima wanders alone, where he meets Oishi Noriko, a woman holding a baby. He manages to find work and the three of them start living together, but every night he has nightmares and feels the pain of a returning soldier for having survived.
As the people who survived the war strive to rebuild Japan, a giant creature called Godzilla appears and lands on Tokyo, as if to add insult to injury. Japan does not have its own military, so it has no weapons or ammunition and the only way to confront Godzilla is with civilians alone. Someone has to draw the short straw… The people who survived the war decide to fight Godzilla.
The highlight of this film is the dramatic depiction of the civilians’ challenge to defeat Godzilla in a post-war Japan that has been reduced to ashes, asking, “How do we fight Godzilla when we can’t rely on the government and we have no weapons or ammunition?” The film also depicts the drama of people who are still trying to live strong lives despite having lost much from the war.
