“If only I could have saved Ai then”… How many times have I wished for such a dream that would never come true. When Aqua, whose beloved Ai was killed in front of her eyes as a child, imagined a world in which she had survived, both the young Aqua and the real Aqua cried out loud. This scene from the second season of the anime “Oshi no Ko” has caused a stir, with people saying things like “I can’t stop crying” and “The depiction of Ai coming back to life is too painful…”

The anime “Oshi no Ko” is based on a hit manga by Akasaka Aka and Yokoyari Mengo, which has sold over 18 million copies. The story begins when obstetrician-gynecologist Goro (CV: Ito Kento) is reincarnated as Aqua (CV: Otsuka Takeo), the son of his beloved idol Ai (CV: Takahashi Rie). After Ai is killed in front of his eyes, Aqua enters the entertainment industry to find the truth behind the incident and get revenge… The first season of the anime was broadcast in 2023, and the second season, which began in July 2024, will air its final episode on October 6th, and the production of the third season has been announced.
Aqua, who is to appear in the stage play “Tokyo Blade”, is trying to improve her own reputation and the quality of the play to lead it to success by putting real emotion into the performance, rather than relying on technique. At the climax of the play, the dead Princess Saya, played by Akane Kurokawa (CV: Manaka Iwami), miraculously wakes up.
At this time, Aqua recalled her childhood memory of her mother Ai being stabbed in front of her. Ai died while bleeding profusely. Of course, Aqua couldn’t do anything at the time, but as she reminisced, she thought, “I’ve had so many convenient dreams. I wish some convenient miracle would happen like in some story. If only I could save Ai then.” She imagined a sad and heartbreaking wish that she had never shown before. In the dream, Ai, who was supposed to be dead, was smiling and saying, “I won’t die like this.” The young Aqua jumped into her arms and clung to Ai, crying, “Ai! Ai!! Aaaaaa!” And on stage, with her unfulfilled dream in her heart, the sword demon played by Aqua cried out loud as he embraced Princess Saya.
Even though it was for emotional acting, Aqua’s imagination of a “world line where Ai didn’t die” was heartbreaking to the viewers. Many viewers were moved to tears, saying, “The hug scene really made me cry,” “What if Ai was still alive…,” “I can’t stop crying,” and “The depiction of Ai coming back to life is too painful…”
