The international animation film festival “Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2025 (TAAF2025)” will be held in Ikebukuro, Tokyo from March 7th to 10th, 2025. The main visual by animator Honda Takeshi has been released, depicting a lively depiction of the characters that will grace the silver screen.
The Tokyo Anime Award Festival, aka “TAAF,” is an international animation film festival that will celebrate its 12th anniversary in 2025. The festival
mainly features the Competition Section, which is for international animation works that have not yet been screened in Japan, the Anime of the Year Section, which is for animation works released in Japan, and the Anime Achievement Section, which honors people who have contributed to the animation industry and conveys the history, techniques, and way of life of their predecessors. It also holds screenings of invited works, symposiums, and workshops for children.
The purpose of the festival is to discover and develop new talent, contribute to the promotion of animation culture and industry, and promote the appeal of Tokyo, helping to boost tourism in the city. With the motto of “Tokyo will become an animation hub,” the festival aims to foster interaction between animation lovers around the world by screening high-quality, highly original works from around the world in Tokyo. The festival provides creators and audiences with inspiration and excitement, and uses that inspiration and excitement to send a new wave of animation from Tokyo to the world.
Ahead of the opening of “TAAF2025,” the main visual has now been released. It was created by Honda Takeshi, an animator who won the Individual Award (Animator Division) in the “Anime of the Year” category at last year’s “TAAF2024,” and is known for serving as chief animation director for “Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo” and animation director for “How Do You Live?”
Set in the city of Ikebukuro, where the event will be held, characters from all kinds of animated films, including heroes, ninjas, giant monsters, and giant robots, appear and engage in battle. The lively main visual conveys the excitement of the audience as they enjoy the powerful film. Honda also shared his thoughts on the creation of the main visual.

This illustration was extremely difficult to work on. I’m glad I managed to finish it. I
was grateful to receive an individual award in the Anime of the Year category at the last Tokyo Anime Award Festival, and as a bonus I was asked to create this year’s main visual.
It was a job with a lot of requests, and (TAAF Festival Director) Takeuchi-san asked me to include the building that would be the venue, to separate the materials into layers, and to make it possible to change the colors later.
I thought I didn’t have time for that, but I thought, “I see!” I regretted accepting the job, wondering if I should draw it as tightly as Kameda (Yoshitomo) did last time, without any gaps,
but I finally got started on the production. My motto is that the fun and excitement of drawing comes from drawing freely, so I wanted to draw more freely. If
even one person can see the fun of animation films after seeing this main visual, then I will have succeeded.
