Towards the end of World War II, Lieutenant Shikishima Koichi goes on a kamikaze mission but makes an emergency landing on Odo Island. That night, a mysterious giant 15m-tall dinosaur-like creature, known to the islanders as Gojira, attacks the base. The unit is wiped out, leaving Shikishima behind.
Tokyo has lost everything in the war and is reduced to burnt ruins. After learning that he lost his parents in an air raid, Shikishima wanders alone and encounters Oishi Noriko, a woman holding a baby.
Somehow, they managed to find work and the three of them began living together, but Shikishima had nightmares every night and felt the pain of a returning soldier for having survived.
As if to add insult to injury, the giant creature Godzilla appeared and landed in Tokyo, just as those who survived the war were trying to rebuild Japan. Japan did not have its own army, so without weapons or ammunition, the only option was for civilians to face Godzilla alone. Someone had to draw the short straw… The people who survived the war decided to fight Godzilla.

“…My…war isn’t over.”
Towards the end of the war, he goes into battle as a kamikaze pilot, but is unable to carry out his attack and survives. After losing his parents in an air raid, he wanders alone through the burnt ruins of Tokyo, where he meets Noriko Oishi. Even as his life slowly begins to return to color, he is troubled by the question of whether he was right to survive.
“Those who survive should live decent lives.”
A strong woman lives alone in the burnt ruins of postwar Japan. She vows to raise Akiko, an orphaned baby who was entrusted to her by a stranger during an air raid, with her own hands. Although she
feels regret and frustration at Shikishima’s anguished words, “I’m a person who shouldn’t be alive,” she strongly encourages and supports him.
“I want to protect this country too.”
A young man with no experience of war and no knowledge of the reality of war. A bit reckless and a bit of a joker. While working with Shikishima and others on mine removal after the war, he encounters Godzilla.
“The people who died that day felt the same way. They all wanted to come back alive.”
A former Navy Air Force maintenance corps member and skilled mechanic. On Odo Island, he encounters a mysterious giant creature with Shikishima. After the tragedy of losing all the members of his platoon overnight, he returns to Japan.
“I am proud that in this operation, which is led by civilians, not a single casualty will occur.” During
the war, he was a technical officer at a naval arsenal, involved in weapons development. His colleagues call him a “scholar.” He encounters Godzilla while working on a minesweeping job. As a scientist, he devises “Operation Kaishin” and sets out to defeat Godzilla with only civilians.
“Adults can survive no matter what they eat.”
A woman who lives next door to Shikishima lost all her children in an air raid. Immediately after the war, she was in the depths of despair and treated Shikishima coldly because he was unable to commit suicide. As she supports Shikishima, Noriko, and their baby Akiko, she gradually regains her original gentle nature.
“Kid, I’m so happy that I didn’t go to war.” He
is the captain of the minesweeping ship “Shinsei Maru,” and also showed leadership in the Godzilla raid. He is a man who has experienced many things in the midst of the war. He cares about Shikishima, Noriko, and Mizushima as if they were his own.
