It has been announced that Shaft will be producing an original animation series called “Virgin Punk” under the direction of Yasuomi Umetsu, director of “A KITE” and “MEZZO FORTE”. The announcement was made at the online event “Aniplex Online Fest 2024” held on September 16th, and the first in the series, “Clockwork Girl”, is scheduled to be released at Cine Libre Ikebukuro and Theater Umeda in early summer 2025.
Umetsu Yasuomi, a genius in the world of Japanese animation, has written, directed and designed characters for works such as “A KITE” (1998) and “MEZZO FORTE” (2000), and has gained popularity both in Japan and overseas for his unique worldview. In recent years, he has been active in a variety of fields, including directing the opening and closing scenes for various popular titles and as an animator, and has now announced “Virgin Punk,” his first anime project as director in about 10 years.
“Virgin Punk” is an original animation series that Umezu is planning and writing himself, teaming up with Shaft, which continues to bring to the world rich and long-loved works such as “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” and the “Monogatari” series.
The script is written by Takahashi Yuya, who worked on the “Kamen Rider” series, the animated film “Lupin the Third,” and the TV drama “Mountain Doctor.” Armed with his unique animation expression, the story depicts the suffering of the main character Ubu, who has become a “bounty hunter,” and the desires and chaos woven by the strong characters surrounding her.
The original animation series “Virgin Punk,” animated by Shaft under the direction of Yasuomi Umetsu, director of “A KITE” and “MEZZO FORTE,” is scheduled to premiere its first episode, “Clockwork Girl,” at Cine Libre Ikebukuro and Theater Umeda in early summer 2025.
