The live-action drama “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” started on October 8, 2024 in the MBS/TBS “Dramaism” slot. The first episode aired on October 8, and has already caused a big stir, with many viewers feeling inspired by the straightforward Kitagawa Marin (Nagase Riko) who is passionate about what she loves.
“Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” is a live-action drama based on the romantic comedy serialized in “Young Gangan” by Shinichi Fukuda, which has sold over 11 million copies. The original manga has won a number of manga awards, including the comics category of the “Next Manga Awards” (2019) and the “Recommended Comics Selected by Booksellers Nationwide” (2020), and the TV anime produced by CloverWorks under the direction of Keisuke Shinohara has also been a huge hit, drawing attention.
The story depicts the relationship between Kitagawa Marin, a popular gal in class who loves cosplay, and Gojo Niina (Nomura Kota), a boy who aspires to be a Hina doll head maker and is the complete opposite of Marin in both appearance and personality, as they grow closer while making cosplay costumes, and as they give their all to love and the things they love.
In the first episode that aired last night, Niina, who aspires to be a Hina doll head maker, is so devoted to Hina dolls that she doesn’t share the same hobbies as her peers and is unable to fit in with her class. One day, the sewing machine at home breaks down and she is unable to make clothes for the Hina dolls, so she comes up with the idea of borrowing a sewing machine from the clothing room at her high school.
Early in the morning, when Niina is making clothes in the empty clothing room, Marin, a central figure in the class, shows up. Marin is a cheerful gyaru girl who lives in a different world than Niina. When Marin sees her making clothes, Niina is so surprised that she drops her Hina doll to the floor. Due to a past trauma, Niina immediately hides the doll, but Marin’s reaction is different from what Niina had imagined, and she praises it.
Marin suddenly tells Niina that she has something she wants Gojo-kun, who is good at sewing, to see, and begins to take off her clothes, revealing a cosplay costume of her favorite anime character that she made herself. Niina honestly comments, “Even if you try, you can’t usually do it this badly.”
Then Marin asks Niina, who is good at sewing and is making costumes for Hina dolls, “Gojo-kun, can you make me a costume?” Niina is puzzled, but she promises Marin, who praises the Hina dolls for being “beautiful”, that she will try to make a costume for them.
On social media, comments included “The two main characters are cute,” “Maru’s acting when she confessed her feelings about cosplay was good. I’m looking forward to the next episode,” and so on. Many viewers were also encouraged by Marin’s straightforwardness in what she loves, saying things like, “‘You should never make fun of what other people like.’ This is why I like Dress-Up Love,” and “I was struck by the importance of properly expressing your feelings to others.”
