The first installment of the drama series sequel to the live-action film “Golden Kamuy,” “Serial Drama W Golden Kamuy – Hokkaido Tattoo Prisoner Struggle Arc,” is being exclusively broadcast and distributed on WOWOW. This time, the highlights of the second episode, which will be broadcast and distributed from 10:00 p.m. on October 13, 2024, have been received, in which Henmi Kazuo, played by Hagiwara Masato, a man who seeks a glittering death, will finally appear.
“W Serial Drama Golden Kamuy – Hokkaido Tattooed Prisoner’s Battle” is a mystery set in Hokkaido at the end of the Meiji era, revolving around buried Ainu gold, and is an adventure drama with fascinating characters. The main cast, including Yamazaki Kento (the 崎 is pronounced “tatsusaki”), Yamada Anna, Maeda Gordon, Yamoto Yuma, Kudo Asuka, Yanagi Shuntaro (the 柳 is pronounced “夘” with the wood radical), Otani Ryohei, Katsuya, Kiba Katsumi, Ohkata Hisako, Iura Arata, Tamaki Hiroshi, and Tachi Hiroshi, will continue to appear in the film. The battle for the “tattooed human skin” that indicates the location of the buried gold is finally getting serious.
The new cast includes Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Maryjun Takahashi, Yuki Sakurai, Akihisa Shiono, Taishi Nakagawa, and Kazuki Kitamura, and each episode will feature a different character. The ending theme will be performed by ACIDMAN, just like in the movie, and eight other artists, including [Alexandros], &TEAM, Kami wa Saikoro wo Furanai, GLIM SPANKY, THE SPELLBOUND, Straightener, and Namanashino Taro, will be performing the theme for each episode, creating a surprising plot twist as the battle for the gold unfolds.
When the first episode was finally broadcast and streamed last week, social media was flooded with rave reviews, such as “It’s amazing quality, just like the movie version! I’m so happy that there are eight more episodes to watch!” and “I’m so excited I can’t sleep…!”. Voices of joy and excitement were flooded in at the start of this epic nine-episode drama series.
In this article, we will introduce the highlights of the second episode, which will be broadcast and streamed from 10pm tonight.
In the second episode, “Herring Fishery and a Murderer,” Sugimoto (Yamazaki Kento) and his friends, who have obtained Nihei’s tattooed human skin, head to the herring fishing grounds in Otaru, relying on information about the next tattooed prisoner. When they arrive at the fishing grounds, Sugimoto and Asi(ri)pa (Yamada Anna) split up with Shiraishi (Yamoto Yuma) to start searching for the prisoner.
During his investigation, Sugimoto finds a fisherman who has fallen into the sea offshore and rushes to his aid. He never imagines that the fisherman is the man he is looking for… Meanwhile, Hijikata (Tate) is also plotting to collect tattoos… and so the story unfolds.
In this second episode, Henmi Kazuo (Hagiwara), the man who seeks a glittering death, finally appears. Henmi is popular among fans of the original work, and after the first episode aired, “Henmi-chan” was already trending on X (formerly Twitter). Fans who saw the preview video have already expressed their amazement at how faithful the original work is to the original, with comments such as “The preview is already amazing,” and “Hagiwara’s (played by) Henmi-chan is so faithful to the original work!”, showing how much attention the series is receiving.
Based on information provided by Shiraishi about a tattooed prisoner, Sugimoto and his friends head to the herring fishing grounds in Otaru, where they meet Henmi, one of the “yanshu” (delinquents) employed to fish for herring. At first glance, Henmi seems like a friendly guy, but in fact he has a unique desire to die with a spark in his life. Why did he have such a desire and begin to act so recklessly? Don’t miss Hagiwara’s performance as he embodies the man Henmi, who shines brightly among a group of eccentric characters. The battle between Sugimoto and Henmi will have even fans of the original work groaning in laughter (?), and the raging climax is not to be missed.
The atmosphere of the herring fishing grounds where the story takes place has been faithfully recreated based on photographs, footage and testimonies from that time. Apparently all the fishing equipment, such as the wooden boats used for fishing and the mokko (wooden backpacks) used to transport herring, as well as the fillets of herring and kasudama (solidified residue made from squeezing the oil out of herring), were hand-made by the staff. The townscape of Otaru, which was also filmed on an open set, has been given a period feel with elaborate decorations added to the exteriors of the buildings. The art, which the staff poured their heart and soul into, is also something to behold.
The ending theme for the second episode will be Alexandros’ new song “Julius.” Alexandros made their indie debut in 2010, and made their major debut in 2015 with the single “Wataridori/Dracula La,” quickly making a name for themselves.
Regarding “Julius,” Yohei Kawakami (Vo&G) commented, “We’ve finally completed a rock song that will release all kinds of frustration,” and Hiroyuki Isobe (B&Cho) commented, “Golden Kamuy is thrilling, cool, and fascinating with its various pasts and intentions that intertwine within a seemingly simple goal. We’re honored to be the ending song for such a work.” We’re looking forward to seeing how their new song, which continues to make a remarkable advance, will liven up the story.
