When the original Dragon Ball ended its serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) and the anime Dragon Ball Z reached its final episode, many fans were overcome with a sense of loss, wondering if Dragon Ball had finally come to an end. However, the original story Dragon Ball GT actually began the week after Dragon Ball Z ended.

While there are still many die-hard fans of “Dragon Ball GT,” the story itself has become less memorable to many with the release of the “Kai” and “Super” series. The first episode started off on a rather sad note, with Son Goku (voiced by Masako Nozawa) having a terrible experience when he tries to return home for the first time in a while.
Pilaf (CV: Tsuyoshi Chiba) and his gang have come to Heaven after discovering the existence of the “Ultimate Dragon Ball,” said to have been created by the previous God before he separated from Piccolo (CV: Toshio Furukawa). However, in Heaven, Goku has just had a battle with Uub (CV: Jun Watashi) called the graduation exam.
“I haven’t been back in years, so I’m afraid Chi-Chi might be mad,” said Goku, as he was about to head home when Pilaf summoned Shenron. The timing is just as bad now as it was back then, and when Pilaf and his gang were found by Goku, they tried to get out of it somehow, but they couldn’t, and complained, “That guy… I could have caught him when he was just a kid…”
Red Shenron, hearing this, mistook it for Pilaf’s wish. He replied, “I understand,” and shrunk Goku. Goku’s size had returned to a familiar size not seen since the beginning of the series, causing the current Earth God Dende (voiced by Hiro Yuki) and King Kai (voiced by Joji Yanami) to panic, but Goku himself said, “Well, it’s fine the way it is,” and went home without a care.
Unfortunately, Goku takes a detour and a bank robbery occurs, which leads to an unexpected reunion with Pan (CV: Yuko Minaguchi). Pan is shocked by Goku’s transformation and asks, “Are you Goku’s grandpa?” She then utters a painful comment that would hit any normal person hard: “It’s terrible that my grandpa is smaller than me!”, even though she loved him so much.
Rather than showing any concern, Chi-Chi (voiced by Naoko Watanabe) bursts into tears, saying, “It’s not enough for me, an Earthling, to age quickly, and this must be Goku trying to pester us!”… Seeing Goku being hated by his family at his first reunion in years, no matter how free he has lived, viewers couldn’t help but sympathize with him.
The anime Dragon Ball GT was broadcast from February 1996 to November 1997 as an original story that is a sequel to the anime Dragon Ball Z. The original work is the manga of the same name by Akira Toriyama, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) for about 11 years from 1984 to 1995. It is a huge hit with a total of over 260 million copies in circulation worldwide, and has led to the production of numerous anime series such as Z and Super, as well as the release of over 20 theatrical versions. It has also been made into numerous game series. In 2024, the 40th anniversary of the series, a completely new anime series, Dragon Ball DAIMA, with original story, story and character design by the late Akira Toriyama, began airing on October 11th.
