October 27th is “Teddy Bears Day.”

Teddy bears are well known as stuffed teddy bears, but their name comes from the nickname of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States. Since Roosevelt had an episode related to bears, his birthday was designated as the anniversary.

Bear-related characters often appear in anime too. They may be bears who live with humans, or they may love bear goods, or they may have the word “bear” in their nickname or name…

So Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “What comes to mind when you think of a ‘bear’ character?”
following on from last year. During the survey period from October 13th to October 16th, 249 people responded. The gender ratio was about 40 percent male, about 50 percent female, and about 10 percent gave no response, with slightly more females than males. In terms of age group, the majority were young people, with about 40 percent under 19 years old, and about 15 percent each in their 20s and 30s.
