The live-action film “Cells at Work” will be released on December 13, 2024. This time, additional cast members have been revealed for the roles of the cells and muscles that “work” inside the body. Takashi Tsukamoto will play the role of Dr. Neutrophil, Wataru Ichinose will play the role of the external anal sphincter, and DJ KOO will play the role of the nerve cell. Comments have also been received from each cast member.
The original work of “Cells at Work” is a manga serialized in Kodansha’s “Monthly Shonen Sirius” by Akane Shimizu, which attracted much attention for its innovative and unique setting of anthropomorphized cells. In 2017, it was selected by the French newspaper “Le Monde” as part of its “Recommended Books for This Summer” list, attracting attention not only from within Japan but also from around the world. The boom further heated up with the anime adaptation in 2018, and the series has become a mega-hit with a total circulation of over 10 million copies.
This film is based on Shimizu’s “Cells at Work” and the spin-off “Cells at Work BLACK” supervised by Shimizu and produced by Harada Shigemitsu and Hatsugaya Issei, and will be the first live-action film in the series to depict the “human world.” It will depict the “world’s smallest story” that takes place inside the human body on the largest scale in Japanese cinema.
This time, new cast information has been released about the cells and muscles that work inside the body. The role of Neutrophil Sensei, a nerve cell specialized in information processing and transmission that transmits various neurotransmitters from the brain to the extremities inside the body of healthy high school girl Hiku (Ashida Mana), will be played by Tsukamoto Takashi, who has appeared in the Kisarazu Cat’s Eye series and The Three Names series. He is a reliable presence for the fully grown white blood cells (neutrophils) played by Sato Takeru, but he can also make harsh decisions at times.
Additionally, the role of the external anal sphincter, one of the anal muscles of Higo’s father Shigeru (Abe Sadao), who lives an extremely unhealthy lifestyle, is played by Ichinose Wataru, who has attracted attention for his work in Netflix’s “Sanctuary” and is also set to appear in the NHK morning drama “Omusubi.” When Shigeru’s anus is in a “pinch,” the battle unfolds between the internal anal sphincter, which looks like a sumo wrestler’s and loosens when stool comes down, and the external anal sphincter, played by Ichinose, which tries to stop it, and it’s impossible not to laugh when watching it.
Furthermore, the role of the nerve cells that transmit information as electrical signals in Nikko’s body and pass it on to the next nerve cell is played by DJ KOO, one of Japan’s leading festival bosses who is active not only in music but also in variety shows. Nikko is excited when Takeda-senpai, the man she has a crush on, greets her, and the DJ gets the tension up in the cells inside her body so high that they can heat up the floor. Don’t miss the sight of the festival unfolding, just like the Rio Carnival.
